Šalms is a lecturer at Riga University Stradina and leading specialist of maxillofacial surgery of the Riga Dental Institute. The main activities are surgery, traumatology, plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Ģirts Šalms is the Chief Physician of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the Institute of Dentistry of RSU. He is a President of the Latvian Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Šalms is Member of the Latvian Dental Association, Association of Baltic Oral, Facial and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the European Society of Craniofacial Surgery.
He is an author and co-author of many scientific publications, a participant in international scientific conferences. He lectures for dentists, oral, facial, and jaw surgeons and regularly attends professional courses on current topics.
During his speech at the Conference, Dr. Ģirts Šalms will share his personal experience of switching to 3D-planning and manufacturing of an operating cap, which was carried out in 2014 at the Dental Institute (Riga) at the clinic of maxillofacial surgery.
